2008 Spring Workshops

 

 

CNU workshops will be held in the CNU/Sun Trust Building at the corner of Warwick and Hiden Blvds. in Newport News. Room 424 (4th floor) directly in front of the elevators.

These workshops are offered at no charge. A confirmation letter will be sent to your Principal when you register. This will “pave your way” for re-certification points, and help the Center reduce the number of avoidable no-shows.

Cookies and beverages will be provided.

 

 

Middle School Financial Fitness for Life January 15, 2008 Tuesday

This workshop is only for Newport News Acheivable Dream teachers, however, if your school is interested in a similar workshop, just contact the Center. Middle school financial literacy topics will be explored using an active-lesson curricula from the National Council on Economic Education. Curricula will be provided free of charge.

 

"Playing" The Stock Market Game    January 30, 2008 Wednesday 4:30 pm -7:30 pm CNU

Do you need an explanation of how to play the online Stock Market Game™ (SMG), followed by an opportunity to navigate the SMG website on your own using a self-guided tour? Participating SMG teachers gain access to a wealth of online curricula designed to make playing the game almost effortless. The game is correlated to the SOL in math, business/marketing, language arts, social studies, and technology and, it has been proven time and time again that teachers can in fact fit the game into their already-packed teaching schedules. Also, teachers and students do NOT need prior stock market knowledge to play the game! 4-12

Trading Around the World     March 13, 2008 Thursday  4:30pm -6:30 pm CNU CANCELLED! Please call the Center if you are interested in an in-service!

Created as a supplement to existing middle- school world geography and world history courses, the 5 units in this guide introduce students to basic economic concepts. Teaches economics concepts under a global perspective. Core economic concepts of scarcity, opportunity cost and absolute as well as comparative advantage will be presented by this National Council on Economic Education publication (included...of course)! Grades 6-8

Middle School Financial Literacy April 16, 2008  Wednesday 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm CNU

Due to SB 950 there are now middle school personal finance objectives that need to be taught to all students. Using a financial literacy CD we will explore some great lessons to teach these concepts. Grades 6-8

Teaching the Ethical Foundations of Economics     NEW Date TBA Fall 2008! CNU

10 lessons that reintroduce an ethical dimension to economics in the tradition of Adam Smith, who believed ethical considerations were central to life. Utilizing these innovative instructional materials your students will learn about the important role ethics and character play in a market economy and how, in turn, markets influence ethical behavior. Grades 6-12
