Economics of Disasters
Register NOW! Seating limited to 25
The CNU Center is sponsoring a new workshop in conjunction with the Foundation for the Teaching of Economics (FTE). The workshop is entitled the Economics of Disasters and will, I think, be of great interest to all secondary teachers!
It will be held February 20, 2009 here at CNU, from 9-4! Lunch will be provided and 6 recertification points will be awarded.
This set of lessons looks at a variety of natural disasters – from the Black Death of the Middle Ages to Hurricane Katrina in our too-recent memory, to fears of avian flu pandemics that haunt the future – through the lens of economic analysis.
Those of us who still remember what it was like after Isabel, or even the Christmas ice storm a few years ago will appreciate the insight that economics will give us to untenable situations.
This workshop will be taught be FTE teachers who are flying in from AZ, and we must guarantee them 25 teachers in attendance.

U.S. Banking System: the Great Depression and Today
9:00-4:00 pm in the CNU/Sun Trust Building
It is no secret that students (and adults) often have a hard time understanding the functions and policies of the Federal Reserve System. Half of this middle and high school workshop will be spent demonstrating practical, hands-on lessons necessary for teaching about the Fed in a way that students will understand and remember! Teachers will also be introduced to the vast array of FREE Federal Reserve Bank resources for teaching topics related to the U.S. banking system today. The second half of the workshop will answer all the essential banking questions about the Great Depression, and include a discussion with a Richmond Fed economist! Economics and personal finance will come alive through a variety of instructional strategies using the Fed’s comic books, games, videos, bookmarks, online simulations and more. Activities will also weave in writing, art, and the economic education and financial literacy objectives. The workshop will be taught by education specialists and an economist from the Richmond Fed.
For grades 6-12 teachers. Limit 20 teachers, go to www.vcee.org to register. Free workshop and free materials.
